PROBATE INVENTORIES. Some Fishlake examples.

From the reign of Henry V111 to the middle of the 18 th century it was normal practice to provide ‘a true and perfect inventory’ of the personal estate of the diseased. In practice the executors of a Will were required to appoint three or more local men to draw up an inventory of the deceased persons property to ensure any disputes could be settled in doing so reduced the possibly of fraud. By 1782 there was no longer a legal requirement to produce an inventory.

Those who undertook this duty, known as appraisers, were friends and neighbours of the deceased and did their best to provide an accurate list and valuation of every item. Usually on the day of death but very often days or even weeks afterwards. The appraisers typically went from room to room in the house, workshop, barns, to include their animals and the crops in the fields, in other words all they found including any debts etc. These inventories attached to Wills provide local historians with a vivid, often fascinating, insight into the living conditions and life style of our ancestors.

A great  many inventories have survived filed along with the Will. The Yorkshire examples only survive from 1689. These inventories are kept with the relevant Wills at the Borthwick Institute of Historical Reseach, University of York.

I have transcribed the following 10 sample inventories keeping to the original spelling as far as possible which in most cases can be understood by the modern reader. Some were sourced and transcribed by the late Dr John Addy, to whom I am grateful.

Notes. Buried 11 May 1692. A gentleman with valuable possessions and land. Given the number of the rooms and size of the house. References to 2 shelves of books, a musical instrument (bass viola) and servants, strongly suggested to me that his property is what we now know as Fishlake Hall or Hall Farm.

Also the local antiquarian Abraham de la Pryme (15 January 1671 – 12 June 1704) makes a reference to an ancient manuscript, formerly belong to Mr Perkin’s of Fishlake, detaining local medieval traditions.
